[Adding subtitles to video is important,](https://www.contentfries.com/blog/add-subtitles-to-video-online) and it doesn’t have to be hard.

By following this process, you can turn what usually takes hours into minutes. And also enjoy it, because it’s fun! So let’s just jump right into it.

STEP 1: Upload your video

You can upload your video from your Google Drive or Dropbox account or directly from your device. Choose the language of the video and finish to proceed to the context editor.

If multiple people speak in your video, use the "Enable multiple speakers recognition" feature to automatically detect and mark them in your transcription.

TIP: If your video is big, use the "Auto-finish once uploaded" feature, so you can work on something else in the meantime.

STEP 2: Polish your captions

Automatic captions generator will do most of the work on your behalf and will produce subtitles with high accuracy. Follow this process to polish your captions in the most productive way:

Switch to "Compressed mode" and proofread your transcript.

Don't mess with the captions timings in this step. Don't worry; you'll modify the timings as you need by automating 95% of that process in the next step.

Switching to "compressed mode" provides clean UI without additional clutter just to focus on what matters. It's like editing your captions in Word or a similar text processor!

Click "Advanced captions editor"

Switch off the "compressed mode" by clicking the toggle icon one more time and fo into the advanced captions editor.

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"> <figcaption>Advanced captions editor - modify settings and generate captions with automatic timings</figcaption> </figure>

Here comes the fun part - set how many lines per caption you want to have, and set the characters per line limit. After you're happy with the settings, click "Calculate captions" and let the magic begin.

Your captions should be automatically timed accordingly in a matter of seconds or minutes, depending on how long your video is.

Feature "Split captions by every nth word" is useful if you're creating a video for TikTok, Instagram Reels, or a similar platform. By using it, you can split your captions by every third word, for example, to create more contextual captions.

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"> <figcaption>You can also split and automatically set timings by using this feature</figcaption> </figure>

After you're happy with the results, save your captions and close the advanced captions editor.

Finishing touches

Now it's the right time to skim through your transcription and make some finishing touches.

The captions editor is very intuitive to work with and it is also very flexible.

It works like paragraphs in any text processor. The difference is these paragraphs are individual captions, which have the timings metadata.

You can split any of your captions just by pressing enter, merge them by backspace, or even copy and paste your own script, or delete multiple captions at once.

Use captions in the layers section if you want to make some changes in timings and voila! You're done!

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"> <figcaption>Use captions in the timeline to modify timings manually</figcaption> </figure>

If anything goes wrong, you can easily undo the last change with the ctrl+z shortcut (or cmd+z on mac). And in case of any disaster, you can restore any captions version from the history tab with 2 clicks.

STEP 3: Export and enjoy!

You can export your captions in plain text, .srt, .vtt, or in many other formats just by going into the "export" tab and choosing the format you want.

You can also export your video with hard-coded captions to share it on social media like Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn, where videos play on mute by default.

Using the "bulk export" feature can save additional time if you want to export your video with different creatives, or aspect ratios.
